WHEN Messrs. Gordon Hill and Son, VI' Crewe, applied to the North Western Deputy Licensing Authority last week to add the carriage of salt to the conditions of their B licence for 13 vehicles, it was stated that the application was for work of national importance all over the country during weather emergencies.

The firm wished to carry salt as required for the Murgatroyd Salt and Chemical Co., Ltd., Sandbach, for whom they already carried up to 60 miles. The spasmodic nature of the work did not justify the addition of another vehicle to the licence.

The Authority granted the application in respect of eight vehicles only.

REASON FOR ENTERING HAULAGE

A'part of their plan to become less dependent upon any single source of income, the Liverpool Warehousing Co., Ltd., bought the haulage and shipping and forwarding business of Messrs. William Harper and Sons, says Mr. W. Milligan, chairman of Liverpool Warehousing, in his annual report.

The company now owned a modern fleet of over 160 vehicles with capacities of from 3-24 tons. The prominent position secured in haulage, says Mr. Milligan, assisted the development of the Sandon Motor and Engineering Co., 4 subsidiary now making a useful contribution to revenue.

THE latest application for higher wages for vehicle builders was considered by the Wages Board for the industry on Wednesday. Yesterday, the board had talks with the unions on proposals for alterations in conditions of employment.

A committee of the board on Wednesday considered a training scheme for apprentices.
