• Commercial vehicle production rose 16.7% in April to 16,534, compared with just over 14,000 in April 2001.

The figures, from the Office for National Statistics, also show that output in the first four months of 2002 rose 1% to 66,474 units. Exports rocketed by 82.4% to 11,083 but home market production fell 24.9%.

'We've seen 11 straight months' strong export production growth in the UK and we remain on track for total output in 2002 to beat 2001's 192,873 units," says Christopher Mac.gowan, chief executive of the SMMT.
