Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Supermarket giant Asda is to recruit 200 truck drivers across the UK as part of an expansion drive.

A total of 1,250 warehouse and distribution jobs are being created to cope with increasing sales.

Distribution director David Gibbons says: "We're sending out more product than we had planned every single week and there's no sign of the pace letting up."

To attract the new drivers Asda is highlighting investment in its fleet, which comprises 700 tractors and 1,035 trailers.

"We have the newest kit of any supermarket, replacing vehicles every three years when competitors replace theirs every five years," says a spokeswoman. "Our spec is the highest in the supermarket sector." She adds that rates of pay are competitive and the working week is well below the 60 hours-plus which is common in many other sectors of road haulage.

The jobs will be based at Asda's national network of distribution centres in Grangemouth, Leicestershire, Wakefield, Wigan, Bristol, Dartford, Washington, Chepstow, Bedford, Didcot, Thurrock and Northamptonshire.

Rates of pay for supermarket delivery drivers compare favourably with most other distribution sectors.

A survey published in November by pay research organisation Income Data Services shows that basic pay for Class ldrivers employed by Tesco is between £299 and £339 for a 36.5 hour week, depending on location.
