'The attitude of the officials was unbelievable'

treatment because he is an HGV driver.

"I honestly believe that if Richard had been a football hooligan and the Spanish police had dumped him at the embassy, or he had been a hooray Henry who had run into some trouble, he would have been helped immediately," says Carstairs. "But because he is a lorry driver and regarded as the lowest of the low, he got the worst treatment possible."

Carstairs is worried that most drivers on Continental runs believe that Consulates will help with any problems. He knows there are limits to what they can do, but feels that these limits should be clearly spelt out to drivers.

"If drivers have a problem, they go to the Consulate," he says. "But I am worried that these places don't want to help — because we are just lorry drivers.

• Commercial Motor contacted the Madrid Consulate and put forward Carstairs' claims about Kirsop's treatment. A spokesman says: "Obviously our two recollections of the incident do not agree."

The Consulate says that the porter downstairs would have contacted staff if Kirsop was unable to get up the stairs and would have told him about the lift.

Its records show that eight calls were made on Kirsop's behalf. The Consulate says it also phoned to confirm the flight.

Finally, the Consulate records show "at 18:15hrs Kirsop was put into a taxi". El by Tanya Cordrey
