• Maintenance problems have led to the duration of West Riding Motor Auctions' licence being cut to expire at the end of the year.

The company, which holds a licence for three vehicles and trailers, appeared at disciplinary proceedings before North Eastern Deputy LA Brian Homer.

DTp vehicle examiner Andrew Barr said that when he visited the company in Novem ber 1989 he inspected two vehicles and one trailer, imposing two immediate prohibitions, one delayed prohibition and two defect notices. In October 1990 he again inspected two vehicles, issuing one delayed prohibition. On both occasions the condition of the vehicles was poor: one had been into the maintenance contractors for repair that day, but still merited a delayed prohibition.

Barry Collins, West Riding's managing director, said there were no complaints about the company's vehicles before 1989.

Pointing out that the company was responsible for the condition of its vehicles, Homer said that it was a matter for the company to sort out with its maintenance contractor.

Collins said that he had already spoken to the contractors about the situation, but he had not done anything else as yet as he was awaiting the outcome of the present proceedings. Questioned about two overloading convictions, Collins said the company bought a transporter said to be capable of carrying four cars. It turned out that this was not so, and instructions were given that only three small cars should be loaded. On the second occasion the driver had disobeyed that instruction.

Horner said that the type of defect found could have caused a serious accident. He directed that a further fleet inspection be carried out before the end of the year, warning that he would take a very serious view of any further defects.
