Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

E NOTED with interest the ws item Irish Swede turns (CM, April 25, p18).

lowever, on behalf of our mt, Westward Garage of :okestown, the official tributors for Scania vehicles reland, we would like to .rect a mistaken impression 'en by the article.

t is true a Scania double:Ater will be on loan to Coras npair Eireann for an extended nod, to be used in evaluation )ls alongside the new Detroitgined Bombardier. This is tirely logical as the mbardier is a completely new sign and CIE is naturally xious to test it.

/Ve cannot emphasise too ongly, however, that the ania is in no way a potential al to the Bombardier but rely a measured and known indard by which to judge the rhbardier.

kis() the deal was not :anged by Scania Great tam, but by Rolf Lindstrom, ania sales manager in ieden and managing director Westward Garage in Ireland n Callery.

3ombardier is currently )rking at full capacity to supply E's pressing needs. In a few ar's time, when the backlog s been reduced, it will be in a sition to supply other stomers as well, and as many erators already run Scan ias ?y may prefer the Bombardier th Scania power packs. As the Bombardier is an .egrally constructed unit, there ould be no difficulty in commodating the Scania ?chanical units in the imbardier structure.

This is common practice and ?re are many examples like the Leyland Titan with Gardner or Leyland power, the Metrobus with Gardner or Rolls-Royce power, and so on.

Even if CIE decided, as many large operators do, not to rely on one particular make of motive power, it could specify the Scania engine in the Bombardier vehicles for its own use.

It does, after all, already operate Detroit, DAF and Leyland engines in a variety of Leyland chassis. What is important is that whoever supplies CIE's needs will do so with Irish-built bodies.
