T' Queen's Bench Divisional Court (Lord Goddard, Lord Chief Justice, Mr. Justice Devlin and Mr. Justice Gorman) last week quashed an award of between £25,000 and £30,000 by Birmingham Compensation Appeal Tribunal to Mr. C. J. Hurst, of Birmingham. Mr. Hurst was formerly managing director of two haulage concerns which were nationalized.

It was stated that in that position he was paid £4000 a year and received an entertainment allowance and other benefits. As group manager of the Road Haulage Executive he now received £1.200 a year.

The Tribunal ruled that he Was entitled to compensation at the highest rate until the age of 70. The Divisional Court quashed the award "with great reluctance." The British Transport Commission offered £800.

NO S.W.T. TOURS FROM BRISTOL WHEN the South Wales Transport VW Co., Ltd., applied to the Western Licensing Authority, last week, to run Continental tours from Bristol, Western Engineering and Motor Services, Ltd., Clevedon, contended that it was the bona fide successor to Westbury Luxury Coaches, Ltd., which went into liquidation earlier this year.

The goodwill of Westbury had been purchased for 1250 and another £750 had been paid for future private-hire contracts. The former general manager of the concern stated that the reason for its liquidation was under-capitalization.

The application was refused.

BEN'S 1951 DONATIONS

rtiONATIONS to the Motor and Cycle L-FTrades Benevolent Fund in 1951 totalled £25,651 and income from other Sources was £1 9,123. Nearly 1,800 new members were enrolled, but deletions and lapses because of non-payment of subscriptions accounted for a net membership increase of only 67 to a total of 14,796. ,

A sum of £26,049 was expended in grants to 387 parties, compared with . 397 grants involving 425,584 in 1950.
