Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

V ISITORS to the Royal Agricultural V Show, which is to be held at Lincoln, will probably have the opportunity of inspecting two new models of the Caterpillar tractor in the D4 and D6. The bigger of the two tractors—the D6—is powered by a six-cylindered four-cycle oil engine, which gives a drawbar horse-power of 65 and a belt horse-power of 75. The drawbar pull, in first gear, is given as 15,500 lb.

From the engine the drive is through a metal type dry clutch to a selective type of gearbox providing five forward

speeds and four reverse ratios. Drytype multiple-disc clutches control each

track, in conjunction with which there is a contracting band brake.

There is an independent two-cylindered petrol engine installed for starting, the unit giving 15 h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m.

Some of the leading dimensions of the Caterpillar D6 model are:—Length, 12 ft. 5-Ps ins.; height, 6 ft. 3+ ins.; ground clearance, 12+ ins.; standard track, 16 ins.

The D4 machine has a four-cylindered oil engine, the drawbar horsepower of which is 43 and the belt horsepower 48. In first gear, the drawbar ph11, as observed by the maker during tests, is given as 9,450 lb. Five forward speeds and one heverse are provided by the gearbox, to which power is transmitted by a dry-type flywheel clutch. The D4 is steered in a similar manner to the D6.

Starting of the main unit, in this case, is by a two-cylindered four-cycle petrol engine giving 10 h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m. In both models the starting engine is coupled up by a multiple-disc clutch and helical gears to the flywheel of the main unit.

Here are some of the leading dimensions of the Caterpillar D4:—Length, 10 ft. Min.; height, 5 ft. 0+in.; ground clearance, II+ ins.; track, 13 ins.
