Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

It always pays to think ahead. Treat yourself to a new Euro-5 truck today and you could end up with the most desirable second-hand motor on the market when emission-based charging comes into effect in 2010....

When it comes to vehicle purchasing, residual values are an important part of putting a deal together. So could a Euro-5 purchase today pay off in three or four years' time?

Dal's marketing director Tony Pain thinks so —in fact he believes operators and hauliers have a chance to make money by purchasing Euro-5 rather than Euro-4 or last-off-the-productionline Euro-3 models.

With Daf offering both Euro-4 and Euro-5 vehicles at the same time. Pain urges operators to be progressive and buy Euro-5: "A Euro-5 vehicle in three and a half years' time will be versatile. Euro-4s might be and Euro-3s won't be. The residual values of these will suffer as a consequence," he predicts.

Tolls and emissions

The advent of toll roads and the European Union's insistence that countries show favouritism to emission-friendly vehicles are key to this. With the proposed charge of 1200 a day for vehicles entering the London low emission zone, or LEZ (see panel), Euro-3 vehicles with particulate traps could become restricted in terms of movement.

With similar schemes currently being considered in Bristol, Edinburgh and the West Midlands, operators might end up with older trucks that simply won't be allowed to enter LEZs without running up huge bills.

Moving the goalposts

The thinking behind this, Pain predicts, is that the goalposts will be moved to encourage the adoption of Euro-5. For example, trucks with this driveline might receive preferential treatment with tolls.

Daf s Euro-5 engines are identical to Euro-4 except for a slightly bigger catalyst and requiring extra AdBlue to the tune off:1_80a year—but that could be less than the cost of one trip into an LEZ with a less eco-friendly truck.
