Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I'D LIKE TO comment on your article about Skills for Logistics (SR.) (C MI6 March).

I was particularly interested in the emphasis placed on the Young Driver Scheme (YDS). Although it has been the subject of some changes, the scheme has been around for about 30 years. No one would question the desirability of the programme. However, no one has faced up to the practicalities that prevent most operators from using the programme to train young blood for the sector.

Constantly we hear the line about insurance problemsWhen [had a YDS programme in the 'Ms, I had no problem with the insurance company as they accepted that a properly trained young person was a better risk than an untrained older one.

A large percentage of YDS trainees are the sons and daughters of family businesses. They would go into the business whatever training was available. And the often 'token' numbers with larger operators are employed in non-driving roles until they're able to drive a truck. In all cases, they would have had a car licence before applying for the scheme.

As far as driver training is concemed.operators' requirements are simple. They expect drivers to have a valid licence for the class of vehicle they wish to drive. And they expect drivers to understand: drivers' hours and tachographs; how not to overload the vehicle or hit a bridge: how to sign for and secure the load; and how to complete the daily checks.

Clearly operators hope that funding for training should concentrate on these areas, whatever the age of the individual. So let's not over-complicate a simple problem a lack of proper basic training.
