Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MR. SIDNEY GARCKE, C.B.E., M.I.Mech.E., • Director, British Electric Traction Co., Ltd.

IMUCH regret that circumstances did not enable me to send an official mesS-age for inclusion in your 90th birthday . number. " The Commercial Motor" is valued by me as a medium for the exchange of views in the road-transport industry. I have the liveliest recollections of its origin under the editorship of my friend and colleague, Mr. E. S. Shrapnell-Smith, C.B.E., when it went so far towards establishing the position of the road-transport movement as a definite industry.

MR. SIDNEY ROGERSON, Public Relations Officer, Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd.

FORTY years is a long time, covering two world wars. " The Commercial Motor," therefore, deserves the heartiest congratulations on its 40th birthday. Only by • honest reporting and an unbiased but informed attitude to the problems of all sections of the road-transport industry, vehicle manufacturers and operators, could the paper have i62so long held a leading place in operators,, world of transport

affairs.

MAJOR R. A. B. SMITH, M.C., A.M.Inst.C.E., M.Inst.T., Past-President, C.M.U.A., Consulting Engineer

T WOULD like to add my congratulations on the 40th I birthday of your journal. Its forthright and progressive attitude is always refreshing, and its leaders are especially illuminating.

When times allow, I expect to see " The Commercial Motor" a fitting ambassador to the Dominions and Colonies, as well as maintaining a steadily increasing circulation at home.

MR. C. COURTNEY-CRAMP, President and Chairman, Industrial Transport Assn.

1IAY first recollection of " The Commercial Motor" goes alback to 1906, when I commenced mycareer as a veryjunior member of the editorial staff of the " Car Illustrated " and " Car Magazine," periodicals covering the private

motoring of those days. • Whereas they have long since disappeared, "The Commercial Motor " survives, floating successfully on the many " industry" waters that have since flowed.

The next recollection is that, during the Great War of 1914-1918, even as it is with this war, there were not enough copies available to satisfy those of us who could have done with them in the Forces. .

To commemorate a 40th anniversary towards the end of a second World War is no mean achievement, but to have consistently maintained a high standard throughout its life merits even greater congratulation. Apart from those who live by supplying vehicles and accessories, or by " hire or reward," " The Commercial Motor" contains much that is informative and of interest to the industrial operator. Therefore I wish it yet another 40 years of faithful service, with its tone, standard and general liveliness of outlook undiminished.

COL. ARTHUR JERRETT,

Chairman, Traders' Road Transport Association

PERMIT me to offer to " The Commercial Motor" and its Editor my sincere congratulations on the anniversary of 90 years of valuable work for the road-transport industry.

MR. J. S. NEAVE, Secretary, British Road Federation

T WOULD like, as Secretary of the British Road Federa1 tion, to offer warmest congratulations to you and the proprietors and staff of " The Commercial Motor " on the occasion of that valuable organ's 40th birthday. It needed real vision to found, in 1905, a journal devoted to commercial road transport. The same 'power Of looking ahead still characterizes the " C.M."

MR. C. H. M. BAKER, Advertising Manager, Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd.

Y0-13 have, of course, received from Mr. W. E. Duck I letter of congratulation and appreciation on the 90 years' service that "The Commercial Motor" has rendered to road transport.

I have read with co&iderable interest your articles on this service and would like to express my own personal congratulations on the very fine work which has been achievedby you—in my opinion no other paper has handled so fully and successfully the many and varied problems.

I am also particularly conscious of the clear-sighted understanding you have always shown on tyre developments and le.,-re problems, which must go hare in hand with the

advantement the road-transport industry.
