Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A TTENTION has been drawn in i'Vrecent issues of The Commercial Motor to the increasing rivalry between rail and road passenger-carrying 'interests in -the North Country, and a new development in that district indicates that competition is likely to be intensified in the near -future., In the past the railways have, in the main, devoted themselves to an intensive effort to recapture some of the truffle which has been-diverted to regular motorbus services in the course of the past six or seven sears, but it would appear that they are now determined to direct their attention elsewhere.

The latest move, which is taking place in the Newcastle district, is an effort upon the part of the London and Nora,. Eastern Railway Co. to secure some of the patronage which has been extended over the past three or four years to the series of novelty tours organized by leading North of England passenger road-transport undertakings. During the period mentioned considerable success has been achieved by the operation of special pantomime and theatre outings, arranged with the particular object of providing residents in the more isolated districts with an opportunity of spending a pleasant evening in the city. By securing blocks of seats for ravings theatres upon certain nights, the companies have been able to offer 'attractively priced tours ensuring a theatre seat and direct and speedy transport to and from the place of entertainment.

Having appreciated the advantages of such a scheme, the railway company have recently launched their counterattack to road transport in this direction by securing a large block of 300 seats for one performance of a production being played at Newcastle, offering similar all-in charges at popular rates from the surrounding district, journeys being, of course, by rail.
