Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Best Places at Which to Buy Coke in the Midlands.

[2936] (Contractors).—We expect the position about coke supplies has become more difficult during the past few weeks. We are asking the Secretary of the London Coke Committee to write to you direct if he can give any help.

Small Daimler Van for Sale.

[2937] (Laundry).—We are unable to put you directly in touch with anybody requiring a machine such as the one which you mention, We think your best plan for disposing of it would be to insert a small 'advertisement, offering it for sale, in THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR.

Wants to Join a Russian .M.T. Convoy.

[2938] (Yorks.).—You should write in the first instance to the Secretary, Russian Embassy, London. It may, however, be useless for you to apply if you are of military age, as there will probably be difficulty in getting a passport to leave the country. That depends in a measure on the demand for your services by the Russian authorities.

Current Hiring Rates Tor a 2i-tonner.

[2939] (Invested).—Our free sheet of working costs (mailed direct) should be of some help to yon. The average for petrol vehicles is now up by 20 per cent.' and for steam vehicles by 10 per cent. Aim owner who contracts must see as nearly as possible twice the revenues per mile run, adding both light and loaded mileage together, as those which are shown, and which concern the costs to an owner who furnishes his own loads. If you are making charges by time, you had better not accept less than 7s. 6d. an hour for a lorry of the Size which you mention ; if the average distance run exceeds five miles per hour, you are entitled to charge an additional is. 4d. per mile on such excess.

Shall He (Married and Age 35) Enter Into Timberhauling Contract Now ?

[2940] (Owner.)—We think that compulsory service for married men who have not attested is unlikely except in respect of men below 31 years of age. If you took on the job to which you refer—entering into a contract to haul 5000 tons of timber—you would he ,engaged in a Certified Occupation which is specially exempted by the Board of Trade, and you would certainly stand every chance of being fully exempted. Only one trailer may be drawn behind a -tractor under the Heavy Motor Car Order ; the trailer must be of such weight that it does not, with the tractor included, exceed 61 tons unladen. Width of tires will depend upon the diameter of wheels. The trailer may not 'weigh more than four tons on each axle when the vehicle is loaded, and with 3 ft. wheels this would necessitate the use of tires a little under 51 ins; in width. Any maker of a trailer will, of course, protect you on that point. If you find that your tackle is such that the joint unladen weight exceeds 61 tons, it might be better for you to register the tractor as h traction-engine, when you can haul two or three trailers, but are subject to certain restrictions in respect of hours of working, and in addition have to

'pay a licence of ner annum for the first county in which you work, and 2s. 6d. a day or £5 per annum for each additional county or county borough into which you go in the course ef your work. The rate which you mention (1s. per ton ner mile in one direction) should pay, provided that delays at the terminal points are not excessive. As a check on the rate, we may say that unless it is likely to yield a revenue per working day of 50s.. apart from any labour which you may have to provide at the terminal noints, there will not be a satisfactory margin of profit.

1358 . Has the R.A.C. Certificate and Wants to Drive.

[2041] (Novice).—Voluntary motor drivers are ncit. sought in commercial service. Owners prefer to pay drivers; in order to have proper control of them. It is only when a voluntary driver also owns a vehicle that his services'. are particularly welcome, as voluntary driving is not as a rule satisfactory. The possession of an R.A.C. certificate, of course, counts for something, but you had better seek employment in the ordinary way, in our opinion. , Alleged Misrepresentation as to Age of Lorry.

[2942] (Caveat Emptor).—You appear to have, on the statement of facts which are put down in your letter, a good case against the company in whose employ the traveller was working, if it transpires that the representation was made by that traveller in his capacity of employee. If he made it on his own initiative, and for his own personal ends, you have only a claim against him personally, so far as we can see. The matter is really one on which we think you had better take legal advice, submitting the whole of the correspondence and documents.

Can He Now Join the A.S.C., M.T.?

[2943] (Bucks.).—Direct enlistment for the A.S.C., M.T., is suspended. Even if it were not suspended, the military law of the country allows any man accepted for the A.S.C., ALT.' to be put into the Infantry or any other branch of the Service, according to the discretion of the military authorities. You will probably find your best chance of being put into the A.S.C., M.T., to exist, according to your qualifications, on declaring your fitness when joining up. It might be some advantage to you to see the recruiting officer ahead of calling up. You cannot avoid the Infantry unless the military so decide.
