rHE ROAD Haulage Associaion's call for the Scottish Execu:ive to launch an inquiry into the Inure of the haulage industry has lamed the backing of two mem:iers of the Parliament's Transport .T.ommittee.
Deputy convener Bruce Crawbrd MSP and Michael McMahon MSP have welcomed thee-petition launched by the RHA in May. Apart from calling for an inquiry this aims to raise the plight of Scottish hauliers struggling with new regulations and rising costs.
"The petition is very helpful," says Crawford."It will bring attention to and put focus on the indus try. Although Westminster is directly responsible for fuel prices and the Working Time Directive, we can bring some influence to bear. I support the call for an inquiry and will argue that the Executive should implement it."
McMahon says not enough MSPs are aware of the industry's problems; he believes an inquiry would change this and therefore benefit the industry. "It may take time and we may hit some brick walls but Jam confident we will get an inquiry," he says.
The e-petition, which has so far attracted 765 signatures will close on 26 August.
