by Eugene Silke • A company set up to provide combined transport between Scotland and EuropeSpedtrans Scotland—begins operations this week.

The Stirling-based operation is the only Scottish transport company geared up to exploit 44-tonne operations using 13.6m trailers, says managing director David Allardyce.

Spedtrans begins work with 10 trucks. 15 drivers and five other staff, A vehicle will be based at each of five French locations plus Milan.

The company also plans to offer a tractive service to other inter-modal operators. It is taking delivery of 30 swap bodies and has another 30 on order.

Spedtrans' first load went from the Willesden rail terminal in North London to Paris on Monday.

The combined transport specialist is targeting Scotland's whisky and paper export. Trials have been undertaken for International Distillers and Vintners, and Whyte & Mackay.

Spedtrans, which has invested £500,000 over three months before the launch, is backed by three or four equal shareholders, including Duncan Barbour, managing director of international haulier Barbour European, and a French investor.
