Like the miners' strike in Britain, the industrial stoppage in Western Germany over the demand for a 35-hour week has, I am told, heavy political overtones. Hans Tauscher assured the press that its effect on Mercedes-Benz sales in Britain was, so far, slight, because good stocks were in hand.
He admitted that the company had been suffering from "growing pains" — which are infinitely preferable to the creeping paralysis discernible in some quarters — brought about by the failure of facilities to keep up with constant rapid expansion. However, the condition has been brought under control with liberal doses of building development.
