A BUS DRIVER and union branch secretary with Cumberland Motor Services has been awarded the BEM in the Queen's Birthday Honours. LUKE RYAN, who retired the day before the award was announced, had completed 38 years of service with Cumberland. His bus driving career started in 1943 when he joined the former Caledonian bus company in Dumfries.

Throughout his working life Mr Ryan has been involved in community and union work. From 1962 to 1981 he was a member of the West Cumbria Disablement Advisory Committee, and for several years he was a member of the DHSS Appeals Tribunal. He has been Whitehaven branch secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union for 28 years.
