LEGISLATION FOR TRACTIONENGINE EMPLOYEES.

COME points of importance to Litraction-engine owners were brought out at the annual meeting of the Scottish Traction-Engine Owners Association, held at Edinburgh. The secretary, Mr. J. T. Henderson, pointed out that employees of traction-engine owners came within the scope of the Agricultural Wages (Scotland) Act, 1937, and the Holidays With Pay Act, 1938.

Mr. Allan Meikle, Tollcross, Glasgow, was re-elected chairman, and Mr. Thomas Raines, Stirling, vice-chairman.

" Immediate Necessity " for Staines By-pass.

WE learn from the B.R.F. that the YV .following resolution has been passed by the members of the Staines Round Table :—" This Table, comprised as it is of business and professional men. in Staines, regards the proposed Staines By-pass as an immediate necessity for the welfare of the town. .

" It is also felt that in the event of hdstilities occurring and a consequent hurried evacuation from London, a serious traffic block might occur in Staines. Therefore, in the public interest, this Table calls upon the Ministry of Transport to take the necessary action to ensure that the construction of this much needed by-pass be no longer delayed."

Stronger Objection to Yorks Wage Move.

ARESOLUTION expressing support for the attitude of the Federation of Yorkshire Road Transport Employers, in opposing the draft proposals circulated by the Central Board with reference to wages and conditions, and in supporting the proposals put forward by the Central Board Employers' Panel, was passed at a meeting of the Halifax Transport Owners' Association.

It is estimated that if the Central Board's draft proposals, including the higher-rated area clause, be put into operation, Grade I wages will apply to 80 per cent. of A and B-licence drivers.

Additions to B.R.F. "Army."

The United Commercial Travellers' Association of Great Britain and Ireland has been elected to associate membership of the B.R.F. SCOTS FIRE SERVICES GET TOGETHER.

FIRST meeting of the Scottish Central Advisory Council for Fire Services was held at the office of the Secretary of State for Scotland in Edinburgh, last week, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Scotland, Mr. H. J. S. Wedderburn, opening the protee.dings. The Council is composed of representatives nominated by the Secretary of State, the three Scottish local authority associations, the Professional Fire Brigades Association, and the Institution of Fire Engineers.

Blackpool Gives Business to Bodybuilders.

lk AR. F. GILLETT, of Blackburn, at 1Y1 the annual conference of the National Employers' Association of Vehicle Builders, at Blackpool. last week, described Blackpool's transport services as " of a very high order." The delegates received a civic welcome from Councillor W. Rhodes Marshall, deputy for the Mayor, who said Blackpool had been the means of putting considerable business into the hands cd bodybuilders.
