AL SHOW

The Exhibits, This Year, are Mainly Confined to Tractors, Stationary Power Plants and Agricultural Equipment. On This and Following Pages We Give an Indication of the Outstanding Items of Interest to Our Readers

A'there will be fewer commercial vehicles available for inspection at the centenary-year exhibition of the Royal Agricultural Society, which is being held this year, at Windsor, from July 4 to July 8, greater interest is likely to be shown in the tractor and stationary-power sections.

On the first day the Show will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on other days. There will be no admission after 7 p.m. Prices of admission are:— July 4, 5s.; July 5, 5s. up to 2 p.m. and thereafter 3s.; July 6, 3s.: July 7, 2s. 6d.; July 8, Is. Children under 14 years will be admitted at half-price on all days. The cost of a season ticket is 12s. 6d. As on previous occasions, the car parks will be in charge of the R.A.C., and season tickets for parking are available at 10s. each. Daily rates are:—Tuesday to Friday Ss. each and Saturday 2s. each.

ALLIS-CHALMERS. Stand 80

THE exhibit of the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., 728, Salisbury House, London Wall, London, E.C.2, will be one of the most comprehensive to be staged, as it will comprise no fewer than 19 different tractors, in addition to four interesting pieces of agricultural equipment. Considerable interest is certain to be ceptred in the Model 40 all-crop harvester, which is virtually a smaller edition of the Model 60 machine, as it will be the first time that it has been exhibited in this country. Four of the tractor exhibits

will be shown with crawler gear, the remainder being on either pneumatics or steel wheels.

ATCO. Stand 331

AS previously, Charles H. Pugh, Ltd., Whitworth Works, Birmingham, 9, will be exhibiting a range of its motor mowers, together with examples of its power-driven Atcoscythe for cutting grass, weeds, crops, etc. The Atco two-wheeled multi-purpose tractor, which is adaptable to ploughing, cultivating, mowing, dusting and other operations, will form one of the main exhibits.

AUTO-MOWER. Stand 40 IN addition to a range of Auto1 Mowers, from the I5-in, model up to the 30-in, machine, the Auto-Mower Engineering Co., Ltd., Norton St. Philip, Bath, will he showing its AutoTractor.

cS2 AVELING-BARFORD. Stand 105

THE principal exhibits on the stand of Aveling-Barford, Ltd., Grantham, will comprise five motor rollers and a dumper of 2i-3-cubic-yd. capacity. Several interesting features are incorporated in the dumper, the chief of which is the device which enables the torque reaction, following the application of the foot brake, to be utilized for tipping the hopper.

There will also be a range of this concern's rollers, including the Victor, which is available as a 12i-cwt. or 15 cwt. machine, the type Y6 machine, which has been specially designed for use on grass, and the type A roller—a general-purpose machine weighing 2 tons.

Representative of the heavier Aveling-Barford products is a roller type DX, weighing approximately seven tons, fitted with an Aveling singlecylindered four-stroke oil engine, and the type SD oil-engined machine, which weighs 9 tons 14 cwt. The latter is fitted with water-ballast-type rolls and is equipped with a four-cylindered oil engine, developing 33-36 b.h.p. at 1,100 r.p.m.

BLAW-KNOX. Stand 78

PARTICULAR interest attaches to the exhibit of Blaw-Knox, Ltd., Clifton House, Euston Road, London, NAVA, by reason of the fact that, included in it, will be two entirely new models, these being the Cletrac crawler tractor Model H and the General threewheeled tractor. The exhibit will be of a comprehensive nature in that six other Cletrac machines will be staged The largest of these is the Cletrac DDH, which has a six-cylindered oil engine, giving 61 b.h.p. at the drawbar, whilst, at the other end of the scale, is the Cletrac Model H. the four-cylindered engine of which is equipped for paraffin fuel.

BAMFORD. Stant! 110 /TANY examples of Bamford staLVItionary engine will be featured by Hamfords, Ltd., Uttoxeter, Staffs, these units ranging from 2 b.h.p. petrol plants up to 16 b.h,p. two-cylindered oil engines. This exhibitor will be staging examples of both Fordson and Allis-Chalmers tractor, together with a wide variety of farming implements and appliances.

CASE. Stand 79

(IN the stand of the Associated Manu

facturers' Co. (London), Ltd., Palace of Industry, Wembley, Middlesex, will be shown nine examples of 'Case tractor, equipped with various pieces of agricultural equipment. A choice of pneumatic-tyred wheels or steel %elleels is given on all models.

In addition to the tractors, the Case pick-up baler and a special winch for use on the Case Model C tractor will form part of the exhibit. Various types of petrol and petrol-paraffin engine will be shown, together with several examples of Amanco pumping equipment. The latter will comprise a midget pump, one working on the rotary principle, and a double-acting piston pump.

CATERPILLAR AND JOHN DEERE. Stand 83

THE displays staged by Jack Olding and Co., Ltd., Hatfield, Hertfordshire, ale always characterized by their comprehensive nature, and this year's Royal will prove no exception. No fewer than eight examples of Caterpillar machines will be shown as well as four models of the John Deere tractor, of which Model If will be exhibited for the first time. This is a row-crop tractor having pneumatic tyres as standard equipment, adjustable rear wheels and differeotial brakes. In the Caterpillar range there are two D2 models, two R2 and one each E4, D6, D7 and D8. One of the 1)2 machines will be shown equipped with a Garret toolbar working on the poser lift, whilst the other will

he shown fitted with a Ransome fourfurrow i)lough. The Caterpillar 1)4, which will lw fitted with a Hyster towing winch, front pull hook and crankcase guard, which is essential when the machine i used on logging work, will be .woi thy of inspection. COOPER-STEWART. Stand 387 THREE examples of the adaptable I Gravely tractor will form the main features on the stand of the CooperStewart Engineering Co., Ltd., 136-7, Long Acre, London, W.C.2. Model D is of 2 h.p. and Model L of 6 h.p.

DAVID BROWN. Stand 86

SEVERAL examples of David Brown tractor and Ferguson tractor will comprise the exhibit of David Brown Tractors, Ltd., IIuddersfield. Visitors will have an opportunity of inspecting an entirely new model, in which the basic design comprises a chassis of box section, into which all the components, which are built as sub

assembly units, are mounted. This method of construction gives a high degree of accessibility, as the removal of the various component parts is readily accomplished.

Arrangements are made for the fitting of a self-contained hydraulic unit c33

on to the rear axle, where it is driven by an extension of the power-take-off shaft. With the normal governor setting of the four-cylindered engine, which has a bore of 3i ins and a stroke of 4 ins:, the belt b.h.p. is 26 and, at the drawbar, 17 b.h.p. is obtained, Provision is made for an alternative governor setting when the tractor is used for road work and, under this condition, a belt b.h.p. of 33 can be obtained, with a roaâ speed of approximately 20 m.p.h.

Many examples of agricultural implements will also be featured by this exhibitor.

DUNLOP. Stand 188 CEVERAL new features in farming

equipment will be on view on the stand of the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. Notable amongst these will be the Lampert hub, designed for use with Dunlop pneumatic-tyred wheels and existing axles, boxes, collets and linch pins. The hub offers an economical means for converting an old farm cart to the use of pneumatic tyres.

Another interesting exhibit will be a new multi-track wheel, which permits the track being altered in a simple manner with the minimum amount of labour.

A wider range of tractor tyres is offered this year, and the concern will he exhibiting a large-section tyre, specially designed for use on grass land. In addition, a useful range of garments specially suited to agriculturists will be exhibited.

FIRESTONE. Stand 75

THE Spade-Grip tractor tyre, which will form one of the exhibits of the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd.. Great West Road, Brentford, Middlesex, is a Pneumatic tyre designed with a deep tread to provide positive grip under the most adverse working conditions. Large V-shaped blocks of rubber are built on to a heavy-tread base to provide a regular spade action. GroundGrip pneumatic tyres and Ground-Grip implement tyres will form other items of interest on this stand.

FORDSON. Stand 74

AREPRESENTATIVE range of Fordson tractors, comprising 11 machines, will be shown by the Ford c34

Motor Co., Ltd., Dagenham, Essex. Of the three agricultural machines, two will be shown with spade lugs and the other with cleats. The essential differences in the three Fordson utility tractors to be exhibited will be in the tyre equipment.

There will be three row-crop machines, one of which will be fitted with metal wheels, front and rear, a second with pneumatic tyres on the front wheels and steel rear wheels, and the third with pneumatics all round.

The two remaining exhibits will comprise a Fordson golf-course tractor and a part-sectioned machine, from which visitors will be able to study the main features of construction.

FOSTE R. Stand 103 A7 n.h.p. traction engine will form a part of the exhibit of William Foster and Co., Ltd., Lincoln. This machine has a single-cylindered engine and works at a boiler pressure of 140 lb. per sq. in. This concern will also be showing two threshing machines and other pieces of agricultural equipment.

FOWLER. Stand 117 IN addition to a wide range of its petrol and oil engines, John Fowler and Co. (Leeds), Ltd., Leeds, 10, will feature 40 h.p. and 80 h.p. examples of its oil-engined rotary ploughs, which are known as Gyrotillers. Three examples of crawler-type tractor will also oe shown, these being known respectively as the 25, 35 and 4-40 machines.

GOODYEAR. Stand 52 EXAMPLES of the well-known Goodyear Sure Grip tractor tyre will be found amongst the exhibits of the Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co. (Great Britain), Ltd., I3ushbury. Various types of tyre on both cast and spoked wheels will be shown, whilst a wide range of tyres suitable for horse-drawn vehicles will be available for inspection.

GREEN. Stand 406

THE main exhibits on the stand of Thomas Green and Son, Ltd., New Surrey Works, Southwark Street, London, S.E.1, will comprise a variety of mowing machines, incorporating both two-stroke and four-stroke engines. This concern is responsible for two types of comparatively lightweight motor rollers, and examples of the 10-cwt. and 1-ton models will be shown.

The 10-cwt. model is powered by a single-cylindered air-cooled four-stroke petrol engine, which develops 21 b.h.p.

at 2,200 r.p.m., this giving a road speed of 2 m.p.h. The larger model, which is known as type R, has a twocylindered water-cooled petrol engine. The roll rims can be changed to give a rolling width of either 3 ft. 2 ins, or 5 ft., the operation of changing the rims being quite easy and occupying but a few minutes. INTERNATIONAL, Stand 99

A'part of a most comprehensive exhibit the International Harvester Co., of Great Britain, Ltd., 259, City Road, London, E.C.1, will stage a range of its tractors. These will be shown with both steel and pneumatic tyres. Mowers, cultivators, ploughs, ridgers and other pieces of farming equipment, for use behind International tractive units, will form a part of the display.

This concern will also show five International vehicles, these being a rigid six-wheeler • with 10-cubic-yd. body and Wood's Hoist twin-ram tipping gear, a 3-tonner with two-speed rear axle on which will be mounted a body for carrying cattle, a 3-tonner with a 5-cabic-yd. steel body, an estate wagon and a 4-ton chassis.

J.P. ENGINEERING. Stand 348

IN addition to a full range of handpropelled lawn mowers the J.P. Engineering Co., Ltd., Meynell Road, Leicester, will be showing two examples of power-driven machines with respective dimensions of 16 ins. and 24 ins.; these will be exhibited complete with carriers and trailers, The 16-in, model is equipped with a J.A.P. two-stroke air-cooled engine of 150 .c.c. capacity, whilst the 24-in, machine has a Burney and 131ackburne 200 c.c. four-stroke aircooled unit. In both cases the transmission system MIS in an oil bath and is totally enclosed.

KENNEDY AND KEMPE. Stand 81

AGR ICI :LTURISTS interested in the Kennedy spiral strake will have an opportunity of inspecting various types on the stand of Kennedy and Kempe, Ltd., Harewood Forest Works, Longparish, Hants. This fitting, which is applied around the circumference of a pneumatic tyre, avoids the necessity of changing the tractor wheels when conditions are normally unsuited to the use of pneumatic. tyres. The application of the Kennedy spiral strake will be shown on Allis-Chalmer and Fordson tractors.

LAMBOURN. Stand 420

QN this stand Messrs. Larnbourn Garages. High Street, Lambourn, Berks, will be exhibiting an example of the Lan-Mourn horsebox providing accommodation for three animals. A feature of this horsebox lies in the fact that the animals all face in the direction of travel. The construction of this horsebox is based on the .carrying of horses for nearly 2,000,000 miles and hence it, embodies the most advanced

hygienic features giving the maximum degree of comfort for the horses and groom. It v.111 be shown mounted on a Commix chassis.

LANZ. Stand 73

IN addition to its usual range of agricultural tractors, oil bath binders, straw and hay presses and potato diggers, a forestry tractor will be shown, for the first time, by the Lanz Tractor Co., Ltd., 7, Coronation Road, Park Royal, London, N.W.10. The singlecylindered two-stroke oil engine, a feature of Lanz tractors, is of 35 h.p. and the model will be shown equipped with winch, fast gears, pneumatic tyres and electric lighting and starting. It will be displayed equipped with all the necessary extras to make it suitable for forestry work. A point of interest in

the power unit of Lanz tractors is the small number of component parts, making for simplicity and easy maintenance.

LISTER. Stand 138

ALARGE scale model of the farm of the future will form the main part of the display to be staged by R. A. Lister and Co., Ltd., Dursley, Gloucestershire. This model is based on the industry being organized on mass production lines and the anticipation of the fullest possible use being made of mechanized methods to secure maximum production from the land. Additional to this set-piece will be a wide range of power units, together with dairy implements and various types of agricultural appliances.

MARSHALL. Stand 102

APROMINENT feature in the display to be staged by Marshall Sons and Co. (Successors), Ltd., Britannia Ironworks, Gainsborough, will be four of this company's oil-engined tractors. These machines will be shown equipped in different ways in order to demonstrate their wide application for dissimilar classes of work. Three types of roller are being shown, including the 8-9-ton machine which is powered by a single-cylindered oil engine, a 10-ton roller which has a three-cylindered

Fowler Sanders engine, and a 2-21-ton footpath motor roller which has a Blackstone oil engine. The Marshall 2i-cubic-yd. dumper, which will also be available for inspection, will be new to the exhibition. It is claimed for this machine that it will run a full day on approximately three gallons of fuel oil.

MASSEY.HARRIS. Stand 132 WHILST the main items to he IT shown by Massey-Harris, Ltd., Ashburton Road, Trafford Park, Manchester, will comprise a wide range of farming implements, it will he staging models of its Pacemaker and Challenger row crop and general purpose tractors. It will also show its 25-40 heavy duty machine with power take-off and belt pulley. It will have steel wheels and spade lugs. MERRYWEATHER. Stand 327

THE exhibits of Merryweather and Sons, Ltd., Greenwich Road, London, S.E.10, may be said to be of a practical nature as the pieces of equipment displayed will form the official fire-fighting appliances of the Show. These comprise a motor Hatfield fire engine, a Hatfield trailer pump, a Warspite portable motor pump and a comprehensive range of smaller appliances. The stand will be staffed by a number of Merryweather fireprotection engineers who will remain on duty, day and night, during the period of the exhibition.

MILLER. Stand 60

h /TILLER wheels and cultivator units IVIfor all types of tractor will form the attraction on the stand of the Miller Wheel and Cultivator Co., Station Road, Chelsfield, Kent. The latest models of the universal cultivator units can be steered independently of the tractor whilst they can be instantly locked so that the unit must follow in line with the tractor. Only four bolts

are used for attachment, thus the removal of a unit takes only a few minutes.

M.M. Stand 84

AFEATURE of the M.M. model Z tractor, which will form one of the exhibits on the stand of Sale Tilney

and Co., Ltd., is that it is provided with five forward speeds. It is powered by a four-cylindered engine with a bore of 31 ins, and a stroke of 44 ins. This unit gives an estimated 174 b.h.p. at the drawbar and 261 h.p. on the belt. The maximum drawbar h.p. is 23, and on the belt 29 h.p. The weight of the standard model is 3,650 lb. and the turning radius is 9 ft.

In addition to various models of M.M. tractors this exhibitor will display a varied range of agricultural implements.

OPP ERMAN . Stand 72

SOMETHING quite new in tractors will be shown by S. E. Opperman, Ltd., North Circular Rdad, Stonebridge Park, London, N.W.10. It is of the two-wheel type and has been specially designed to meet the everyday requirements of the average small farmer who is in need of a machine of a size and nature that will provide a power-driven unit as adaptable and economical as horses. It is equipped with a four-cylindered four-stroke

engine developing 15 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m. It has a two-speed and reverse gearbox, the final transmission being through heavy roller chains. It has a turning circle of 18 ft. and weighs about 10 cwt. It is named the Mectaur.

PETTE RS. Stand 95

PETTER power units need no introduction and visitors to the Show will have an opportunity of inspecting a representative range. The power of the air-cooled engines goes from

11 b.h.p. to 3 b.h.p., and these are made portable by mounting on a suitable pneumatic-tyred two-wheel trolley.

Petters, Ltd., Loughborough, will make a feature of its lighting sets, which, with fully automatic operation, are suitable for battery charging, and direct lighting.

RANSOMES. Stand 415

tural implements and appliances will, as on previous occasions, have a comprehensive exhibit including tractor ploughs, cultivators, toolbar frames and so on. Motor cultivators will be shown fitted with different types of toolbar equipment.

RICE. Stand 424

THE exhibits to be staged on the stand of Rice Caravans, Ltd., Portland Works, Cosby, near Leicester, will be the company's Beaufort two

horse twin-axle trailer, a 15-cwt. cattle trailer, designed to carry one or two animals, a single horsebox trailer and a baker's delivery van. Front and rear loading is provided for on the Beaufort trailer, the four wheels of which are equipped with an automatic braking system. Another piece of equipment to be shown is the Economus trailer, which is of 30-cwt. capacity. It is designed to carry from three to five cows and up to 40 sheep or pigs.

ROADLESS AND BRISTOL. Stand 68

THIS will be the first occasion on which Roadless Traction, Ltd., Gunnersbury House, Hounslow, Middlesex, has exhibited at a Royal Show. Visitors %vill have an opportunity of inspecting. the submersible lifeboat Roadless tractor, which is specially designed for lifeboat service, and a Roadless tractor known as a half-track model specially suited to aerodrome maintenance work. The power unit and part of the transmission system in the lifeboat machine is as used in the Case Model L, and the power unit in the half-track model is a F'ordson. Also on this stand will be shown three Models of the Bristol tractor, all of which embody the Roadless rtiliher-jointed track. The Bristol

machines employ Jowett engines, that in the park and golf-course model being two-c) hindered unit and in the heavier model the four-cylindered engine. The two-cyliluIered machine gives a drawbar pull of 2,000 lb. in first gear at a speed of 1,06 m.p.h. and the four-cylinder Bristol tractor gives a drawbar pull of 2,200 lb. wider like conditions.

RUSTON AND HORNSBY. Stand 108

EQUIPPED with a 10-13h.p singlecylindered Ruston oil engine, the w I concern of Ruston and Hornsby, Ltd., Lincoln, will stage a

new locomotive. Ting machine is so designed that it can be controlled by a man walking alongside.

The company will also show a 16-20 h.p. model, a range of oil, petrol and paraffin engines, and pumps and pumping plant.

STAN/1A\'. Stand 148

TE new inint toolbar, which will be 1 shntk is y Stanhay, Ltd., Ashford, Rent, on a Fordson row-crop tractor, possesses aiivantages which will be Obvious to the agriculturist. It has been designed to fit under the belly of

the tractive unit and it is available in various widths to suit all growing crops.

Another interesting piece of equipment is this concern's power-lift reartype toolbar, which will also be shown. Further items will be a pneumatically lifted and controlled plough, an Elwick wheel less cultivator, telescopic front axle and telescopic rear wheels in iron and shod with pneumatic tyres.

VINCENT. Stand 423

THE exhibit of Vincents,of Reading, Ltd., Station Square, Reading, will comprise two horseboxes and a twohorse trailer. The Vincent three-horse box has two loading and unloading ramps, one at the side and one at the rear, and as the animals face one way it needs only one groom to attend to them. The groom's compartment has seating for four.

The trailer to be shown is of the lowloading type, the loading line being only 12 ins. It is fitted with four wheels and an automatic braking ,systern. As the interior centre division is readily removable, the trailer can be employed for any duty.

WALLIS AND STEEVENS. Stand 156

TWO examples of road roller and a hand-spraying machine will form the principal exhibits on the stand of Wallis and Steevens, Ltd., Basingstoke. The 8-ton roller has a National three-cylindered vertical oil engine and a rear axle which automatically accommodates itself to road camber.

A Morris Industrial four-cylindered unit provides the power in the Wallis and Steevens lightweight roller, which is suitable for use on drives and footpaths.

The spraying machine is for use with cold emulsions, and operates direct from the drum.
