Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW oil-engined cattle carrier for long-distance haulage has been produced in Prance by the Berliet Co. This is a double-deck vehicle intended particularly for the transport of calves, and it incorporates the makers' 15-ton G.P.E.F. six-wheeled chassis.

The Berliet 120 mm. and 160 mm, sixcylindered oil engine with the Acro combustion system is employed, one of the features of the design being a deep combustion recess in the piston head, into which the jet of fuel from the injector is directed diagonally.

The chassis is constructed on standard Berliet lines, with a three-speed gearbox and a double-reduction gear on the rear axle. Westinghouse braking control is employed on all six wheels, whilst the hand brake operates through separate shoes in each of the four rear brake drums.

The body, which is a Bernet product, accommodates about 80 calves on two platforms, the upper one of which is made in three sections. The animals are first driven into the forward section, which is then enclosed by means of slid

ing panels, and it is next raised by handoperated winding gear.

Slots in the sides of the body serve as guides for its panels.

This process is repeated with the other two sections, and the loading of the lower deck can be started. Here, again, the sliding-panel arrangement is of great convenience, and, as the panels remain in position while the vehicle is travelling, they prevent the animals from being thrown together when the driver is braking sharply or accelerating. The area of each deck is-20 sq. metres.

Drainage from the upper platforms is by means of pipes carried up through the metallic framework of the body.

The tailboard, which serves as a loading ramp, is lifted by cables in the usual manner.

A sleeping compartment is arranged

over the driver's cab, with a bunk in which a second driver can rest. The lorry illustrated, which weighs 121 tons unladen, has been supplied to a cattletransport concern operating between Chateauneuf in Charente and Paris, a distance of over 500 Idioms.

Two fuel tanks are provided, each having a capacity of 250 litres. The laden vehicle is capable of a maximum speed, on the level, of 311 m.p.h. whilst with the Berliet 130 mm. and 140 mm. engine the speed is stated to be 372 m.p.h.

The vehicle is one of the most advanced cattle carriers yet seen in France. Side emergency doors are provided to each compartment, through which sick animals can be withdrawn when necessary, without the necessity of completely unloading.
