HUGH FEATHERSTONE. the former director-general of the Freight Transport Association (FTA), has died at the age of 83.

Featherstone joined the forerunner of FTA, the Traders Road Transport Association, in 1958.

He led the FTA and its members through the Transport Act of 1968,which introduced 0-licensing and changes to drivers' hours' legislation. Featherstone also oversaw the FIA's relocation to its Tunbridge Wells HQ in 1975 He retired in 1984, the same year he received a CBE, having received an OBE 10 years earlier.
