Normal stage services would be operated by rear entrance double-deckers, superimposed by limited stop services operated by front entrance, rearengined double-deckers. Finally, some special cross-city services operated by maximum (seating) capacity single-decker express buses would be introduced_ These latter would link dense suburban areas with the city, and. operate almost non-stop. Meanwhile, Leeds City Transport is purchasing 30 Leyland Atlantean, 30 Daimler Fleetline and 30 AEC Regent double-deckers and 10 as yetunspecified single-deckers.
Edinburgh Recruiting Scheme : Edinburgh Corporation transport department has begun an intensive training programme to add 200 drivers to the staff; conductors with driving experience are being upgraded with seniority to assist in qualifying for their p.s.v, licences. Nine inspectors are now working full time on driver training in an effort to add to the driving strength. Biggest problem here is loss of men after qualifying. Some recovery is reported and in the past year 100 former Corporation drivers were regained. But this is still far short of balancing need.
Conductor Problem at Derby : Bad timekeeping and excessive cash shortages are blamed for Derby Corporation Transport having a heavy annual wastage rate in male conductors. Mr. J. E. Frith, general manager. said in his annual report that in many cases conductors had been dismissed. for various reasons, chiefly for very bad timekeeping or excessive cash shortages. The continuing heavy wastage of traffic staff had again reached disquieting proportions.
