THE A-variation application of East I Riding Transport Co. Ltd., of Hull was resumed at Leeds on Monday before the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, Maj F. S. Eastwood. The company sought to add six articulated tractors and semitrailers of 63 tons with a normal user of: "To be used mainly in connection with Hull/Rotterdam/Gothenburg ferry trailer services." A decision was reserved.

Appearing for British Road Services, objecting, Mr. J. W. Bosomworth submitted there was a lot of evidence based on "hope and expectation" but no evidence of any "virgin traffic ", and that for sometime at least the inauguration of the ferry services—Hull/Rotterdam in November and Hull/Gothenburg _ next spring or 'sammerl—wouldresult in the diminution of traffic carried by conventional means.

In aid of his submission, Mr. Bosomworth read out the editorial comment on ferry services in The Commercial Motor of July 16, which emphasized the number of ferry services, and quoted the question posed 011 "saturation approaching".

Mr. Jan van den Bos, who operates 14 vehicles and 11 trailers from a base near Rotterdam, spoke of the general traffic orivinatinq, from Holland, Germany and France which would accrue to the Hull/ Rotterdam service in association with Francs Maas of Rotterdam. In answer to Mr. R. E. Paterson, appearing for the applicant company, he revealed having been authorized additional tonnage in Holland, on a temporary basis, in connection with the new service.

The managing director of Key Ware housing Co., Mr. J. W. Jackson, referred to his personal contacts recently in Holland having revealed that in the early stages roll-on/roil-off facilities would only divert traffic from conventional means. New traffic, he said, was "mythical ".

Mr. J. R. Whitehead, BRS Ferry Services, speaking of experience at Tilbury and of the Irish ferry services, forecast that Lancashire flats would be used more extensively to and from the Continent Mr. Paterson submitted that on the evidence of Mr. van den Bos alone of 60 trailer loads per week from Berlin, France and Holland, the application was justified.
