A WOULD-BE haulier whose application to run a 2f-ton lorry on an island off the coast of Scotland has been rejected by the Licensing Authority three times since 1950 was granted a licence, on appeal, in Edinburgh, last week. He was Mr. Angus Macaffer, Islay, who, the Transport [Appeal] Tribunal decided, is to be allowed to operate within a six-mile radius of Port Ellen.

The Tribunal rejected the appeal of Mr. Thomas Guthrie, Aberdeen, against the Licensing Authority's refusal to renew his A licence, but they deferred their order until September 22 so as to give the appellant an opportunity to gather evidence to apply for a new licence.

Mr. Guthrie, who has been in business since 1921, told the Tribunal that the Authority'i decision was made because, owing to personal ill-health and his son's absence in the Army, his vehicle had not been operated for some years. His son had now returned, and he had evidence that there was plenty . of work for the vehicle.

Mr. Hubert Hull, chairman, said it was clear that the decision was correct on the evidence presented at that time. . The Tribunal could not hear the case again. He did not consider that there was any difference in principle between an application for renewal of a licence and that of a newcomer, except that it was easier in the first instance to show demand.

NEW DENNIS TRAILER CESSPOOL-EMPTIER

(-NNE of the three Dennis vehicles to

be exhibited at the Baghdad Fair by the L. Forster-Sabbagh Co., Dennis agents in Baghdad, will be a new trailer cesspool-emptier known. as the Rafidain. it has been designed for use in congested areas where difficulty may be experienced in manoeuvring the more usual type of appliance.

It employs the vacuum principle, the air being evacuated from the 150-gallon tank by a self-contained power unit and pump. Power is supplied to a Hammond rotary air pump by a Dennis 41-7 h.p. air-cooled petrol engine, a two-way valve being provided so that pressure can be built up in the tank for discharge purposes.

The other exhibits will be two Dennis ta6 Jubilant chassis powered by the Dennis 110 b.h.p. six-cylindered, direct. injection oil engine. The specification includes a five-speed gearbox, with preselective overdrive fifth speed, coupled with an auxiliary gearbox, making 10 ratios available.

Both chassis will have left-hand drive, one being of 13-ft. 6-in, wheelbase and the other of 17 ft. 101 in.

FOAM OUTPUT OF 10,000 G.P.M.

1-1 A NEW Pyrene fire-fighting tender

recently demonstrated has a foam output of 10,000 g.p.m. and an initial total output of 180,000 gallons without replenishment of the foam compound. A 650-gallon supply of foam-making compound is carried, foam generation being effected by two Dennis 700-900

g.p.m. two-stage turbine pumps, each powered by a Rolls-Royce B.80 160 b.h.p. petrol engine.

Water can be discharged at 100 p.s.i. at a rate of 1,960 g.p.m. Two of these appliances have been built, the one demonstrated having a Leyland Hippo chassis and the other a Leyland Beaver chassis.

Mechanical Horses as Load Carriers

THE use of Scammell mechanicalhorse units as load carriers, instead of as tractive units in conjunction with semi-trailers, has been adopted with marked success by St. Cuthberts' Co-operative Association, Ltd., in Edinburgh. The petrol engine has been replaced by either a Perkins P3 or Standard oil engine, and a Bedford rear axle of 5 to 1 ratio is employed.

Carrying a payload of 2 tons, these vehicles are not only extremely manceuvrable, but are also most economical, fuel consumption being only a third of that of the petrol engine.

Twenty such conversions have already been made and another 20 are scheduled.

The company are also using Scammell articulated vehicles to carry 400 gallons of milk on a daily round in densely populated territory. A Perkins P3 oil engine has replaced the original petrol unit.

One outfit has replaced four smaller units, so that, from all aspects, the scheme is proving most economical. Fuel consumption works out at the rate of 24 m.p.g.

Similar units are to be used in connection with the grocery side of the business, as wall as for hauling mobile shops.

fl4m. SINGLE-SPAN BRIDGE?

T" plan for constructing a suspension bridge between .Widnes. and Runcorn has been abandoned in favour of a single-span bridge which will cost an estimated £1,720,000. Designed to provide a 30-ft,roadway, the proposed bridge would have a single span of 1.100 ft.—the longest in Britain. It would take three years to build.

Wind-tunnel tests on a model of the proposed suspension bridge showed that the close proximity of the railway bridge might create dangerous wind currents.
