Herts hauliers ask for police help on thefts

• Hertfordshire hauliers are calling on the police to take action following a spate of thefts of trucks and plant.
Over the past month thieves have struck at 10 haulage and plant hire firms within a 10-mile radius of Harlow. The victims say the police are not doing enough to catch what they believe is an organised gang.
Harlow-based Pat Taylor, who runs two vehicles on sand work had a 17.5-tonne Mercedes-Benz stolen on 28 December. The custom-built tipper has cost £42,000 to replace, and his wife and partner Liz Taylor says they will have to spend another £1,500 to tighten security. On 17 January Mark Peters of MDP Haulage had his Leyland Daf 2100 tipper taken from outside his house in Hatfield: two diggers and a truck were also stolen.
Two weeks ago Harry Hayden, owner of Harlow-based haulier F Darlington, had two of his five vehicles and their loads worth more than £20,000 stolen from his yard.
A spokesman for East Hertfordshire Police says: "We seem to be suffering more than our usual share of lorry thefts at the moment but each case is being investigated thoroughly."
