Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Operator, Labor

A long-established reader of CM, I was interested to read Mr Shaw's letter (CM December 26) about his experiences in seeking employment, with an international operator, since this is my own Current occupation.

Previously engaged as an owner-driver, financial restraints imposed by my bankers have caused me to stop trading and seek regular longterm employment with a reputable operator; and being of good education, wide experience and being able to speak some French and a little German, I naturally assumed I had something to offer. Personal ,telephone calls and letters -from former customers have assured me of first-class references as to my character and reliability. I am 32.

However, 150 telephone inquiries and 30 letter inquiries later, I am convinced that the United Kingdom simply does not want trustworthy men, The economic situation a-aide, commendable attributes as I know them no longer seem necessary in order to fill vacancies. One operator admitted he 'hired and fired as he pleased because his was a deprived area—he was not bothered about the quality of his men, so long as he -had the right number!

The careless attitude of so many UK employers surely does not encourage men to develop loyalty, and consequently there is -a backlash to employers when men do prove unreliable. Yet another British vicious circle, perhaps?

Personally, when a British operator steps in at the last minute 1976 will probably find me driving a Continental operator's attic, since trust is more likely to be rewarded there. With sterling in the bargain basement, the pay packet will be worth having too!
