Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

1 am a director/partner of an international haulage company, and have read with astonishment the letter from K. W. Shaw, of Hendon, CM December 26.

Although he appears to be aware of the high capital investment and running cost factors associated with owning and operating a fleet of artics to and from Europe, he is quite oblivious of the law.

Whilst companies like ours, would be more than interested in employing drivers with more than above average appreciation of prevailing conditions and who are "profit motivated," as he claims to be, it is nevertheless of cardinal importance that we do not ignore laws intended to protect as well as guide us.

If Mr Shaw has any real interest in employment of • this kind, I suggest to him, that he enrolls with the RTITB either privately or through his present employers (assuming he is still driving for a living), and on completion of the course, provided he attains the required standard as set out by the MoT for hgv I, he should find no difficulty in obtaining gainful employment in the London or Home Counties area.

It just is not good enough to imagine that two years driving a 1-ton van qualifies him for the very specialised task of driving a 32-ton-gvw artic. After all, he would not expect to undergo major surgery, if in hospital, under the supervision of an unqualified surgeon—or would he ?

R. J. MASON, • Unit Continental Ltd (UK), Watford.
