AN allegation by a special committee of inquiry that the standards of efficiency of Nottingham Transport Department were not as high as they could be, has been rejected by the city's transport committee. who, in a report to he submitted to the council, say they can find no evidence to justify it.

The committee of inquiry was set up early last year to investigate the department because the undertaking had been Losing money for a number of years.

Reporting their findings in July, the committee said the primary cause of shortcomings was lack of drive by the management as far down as inspector

level. Dismissing the allegation, the transport committee say: "The committee's knowledge of the management and staff points to the opposite conclusion."

Another point on which the two committees failed to agree was the question of fares and inspection of tickets. The investigating committee criticized inspectors who did not check passengers tickets, but the transport committee say that, apart from the normal checks. special "blitz checks" were made without warning.

AUTY'S SELL TO RIBBLE

THE whole of the share capital of Auty's Tours, Ltd., Bury, Lancs. has been purchased by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd. Auty's will continue as before, and their office and garage in Millett Street, Bury, and their staff will be retained.

Ribble will provide a fleet of modern coaches for Auty's 1956 coach season and new vehicles are on order. Six four-day tours will be run at Easter.

Mr. Norman Auty started the business in 1924 with a Lancia. By 1930 he had five vehicles and by 1939 nine. Since • the war, his son, Mr. Gilbert Auty, has been mainly responsible for managing the concern.

COACH OPERATOR FINED 170

FINES totalling £70 were imposed upon Charles James. trading as James Motor Garage, 109 High Street, Wavertree, Liverpool, at Liverpool, last week, on seven summonses for running coaches during August in excess of the number specified on his licences.

Mr. D. J. R. Turner, prosecuting, said that James was authorized to operate four coaches a day, but applied for another three. For: the defence it was stated that the offences were committed at an exceptionally busy time. •
