Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MOST surprisingly is it stated in your leading article of December 2 that the estimated cost of material and labour for the Govemment-type gas producer should not greatly exceed £15, and that it should be possible to equip a vehicle for £45 to £50.

Then you refer to a supercharger installation cost of 250. Do you really, as an expert, intend your article to convey to the public that a gas producer can be made and installed at less cost than that of the supercharger?

It is utterly impossible to make any gas producer for £15, if that figure is to include coolers, scrubbers, filters and other necessary components. Such a statement is misleading and should be contradicted immediately.

The material and labour for the generator component of a gas producer may not cost more than £15 (as one item in the manufacturer's bill), but that is only one item, and then it does not cover heat-resisting plaques, tuyere, grate, etc. One is, therefore quite at a loss to comprehend the reasoning or meaning of the statement

in question. N. A. ADAMS, Secretary,

Gas Producers (Bellay), Ltd.

London, S.W.1.

[The criticisms contained in this letter were answered on page 413 of our issue dated December 9. So far as the cost of a supercharger installation is concerned, it must be remembered that such equipment has to be made to extreme limits of accuracy and balance, as the moving parts work at very high speed, whereas a gas producer is comparatively simple to make, once a satisfactory design has been produced. We are interested to note that Mr. Adams does agree that the labour and material for the generator component might not cost more than £15, and that is the figure we gave in our article. We quite realize that, as at present constructed in comparatively small quantities and in circumstances of considerable difficulty, it is almost impossible to equip a vehicle for, say, £50. We stated that this could be done only if producers were built in large numbers on a mass-production basis, whilst commission to agents, etc., would have to be added.—ED.]
