Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ERISTMAS being over and there V./being no haulage business worth mentioning in the conveyance of empties, readers of these notes will appreciate that they can now settle down to a fairly steady routine for some months. The coal business is, perhaps, the one which ofrers immediate prospects for those whose interest is in short-distance haulage, and both the cotton and engineering trades give indications of pronounced improvement.

North-east Coast.

Conditions in the coal and coke industry in this area continue to be good.

The North Eastern Marine Engineering Co., Ltd., Sunderland, has received a contract for the machinery for a 3,500-ton vessel to be built for Z. Constantine, Ltd., Middlesbrough, by the Burntisland Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Dorman Long and Co., Ltd. Middlesbrough, has received a £5,000 3 contract for supplying 4,000 tons of tram rails foe the London County Council, whilst, ia addition, a contrast valued at £150,000 has been received for steelwork for the Swansea Power Station. At Hebburn, Reyrolie and Co., Ltd., has secured a £15,000 contract for switchgear for Cape Town Corporation and another £18,000 order for switchgear for Blackburn Corporation.

The Salvation Army at Leadgate (Co. Durham) is to erect another central hall in Front Street, whilst 39 houses are to be built in North Shields to plans by Messrs.,F. R. N. Haswell and Sons, 77, Tyne Street, North Shields.

Yorkshire.

Sheffield manufacturers are expecting business all round to improve in the New Year, when present stocks of imported goods are used.

Leeds Town Council is considering a scheme for slum clearance, which, if proceeded with in its entirety, will cost £12,500,000 and will take 25 years to complete. A commencement is to be made by the erection of 1,000 houses on sites near the centre of the city. A new elementary school is to be built at Stainforth at a cost of £30,000.

Halifax Town Council has passed plans for a mill and warehouse at Bailey. Hall Mills, Bank Bottom, for Petrels and Baldwins, Ltd, and a dyehouse at Lee Bridge for 3. Crossley and Sons, Ltd. Hebden Bridge Urban District Council is to erect a new public library.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

A large factory has been acquired at Blackburn by Moffat and Co. for the manufacture of electric cookers and refrigerators. A. V. Roe and Co., of Southampton, is transferring a good deal of its work to Newton Heath. W. P. Hartley, Ltd., is to erect a peacanning factory at Aintree.

Wigan Public Assistance Committee proposes to erect a general hospital at Billinge. Birkenhead Town Council is to apply for sanction to borrow £18,550 for " the provision of three chapels and a crematorium at the

Landican cemetery. Cheshire Education Committee is to build schools at Runcorn. Kelsall, Sale and Ellesmere Port. The new mill for Bovsaters, to be built at Ellesmere Port, will cost 1850,000.

Midlands.

The pottery industey of Stoke-onTrent and the surrounding districts is steadily improving and it seems certain that the demand for haulage in that area is likely to increase in the near future. Makers of light iron castings are finding business a little better than it has been for some time past and there is an improvement in the demand for steel billets and small bars. Braes founders in this area are more active.

In Nottingham and Leicester, although the business in hosiery is slacking off a little, that circumstance is offset by an improvement in the demand for knitted underwear. The outerwear section of the trade is also busy.

A new school is to be built in Birch Terrace, Hanley, whilst the Commercial Estates Co. is to build 236 houses at Fillybrooks Nurseries, Stone, Staffs. Lincoln Corporation proposes to spend £15,000 on street improvements. A new company interested in the manufacture of aluminium-alloy products is commencing operations in Merthyr. In the beginning, work on only a small scale is to be carried on, but the business is expected to grow.

The outlook in the engineering industry is more promising than it has been for a long time. Hundreds of men are being engaged and orders for tin-plates are increasing.

Cardiff proposes to erect 200 workmen's dwellings in the city and Swansea Corporation electricity committee is to erect a new power station.

East Anglia.

West Suffolk Canners, Ltd., a new company, proposes to erect a canning factory at Bury St. Edmunds.

Scotland.

A Viennese manufacturer has acquired a factory at Paisley for the production of pure silks. The Darlington Fabrics Corporation, of America, is arranging to produce specialized fabrics in Glasgow.

West Country.

Bath Town Council is considering the construction of a new road between Pirrepont Street and Orange Grove. Bristol Town Council has in prospect a scheme for the erection of an abattoir at Greenbank at a cost of £30,000.

London and Home Counties,

C. T. Brock and Co., the firework manufacturer, is establishing a new factory between Hemel Hempstead and Redhourn. Work is about to start on a new cinema in St. George's Place, Canterbury. Fincldey Urban District Council has approved plans for 154 houses and 22 shops on the Halliwiek Manor Estate, and a preparatory echool is to be built in Kingsley Way. A secondary school costing over £40,000, is to be built at Brooks Hill, Harrow Weald.

It is proposed to establish, at Southsea, an amusement palace at a cost of 1250,000. Bermondsey Borough Council has in prospect a scheme of slum clearance at Porlock Place, Bethel Place, Swan Lane and Albion Yard. Finsbury Borough Council proposes to spend over £52,000 on the erection of houses on the Margaret Street site, whilst Southwark Borough Council is to erect three further blocks of houses on the Doddington Grove site.

Coulsdon and Purley Urban District Council is proposing to spend over £37,000 on new roads and maintenance and repair of existing roads. Surrey County Council is applying for sanction to complete the second section of the Guildford-Godalming By-pass. Clacton Urban District Council is to undertake various works costing £111,000.

A new school is to be built at Enfield Highway at a cost of £34,000, a council chamber is to be erected at Littlehampton and a school is to be built at Pinner Park, Uxbridge Urban District Council has approved plans for 187 houses on the Oak Farm Estate.
