Plan of Battle

By The Hawk

FEW people can realize the magnitude of the task which the London and Home Counties DivisiOn Of the Traders Road Transport Association have taken on in conducting a census of traders' transport requirements in the 23 areas of' London affected by the proposed bans on loading and unloading.

• Census forms have to be distributed to about 3,000 people. CharnINers of commerce and trade are giving valuable assistance, but the small staff of the T.R.T.A. in London have also had to call personally on hundreds of traders to hand over the forms and explain their purpose,

Mr. Harold Willis. Q.C., has been briefed to present the general case against the bans and if he is short of ammunition, it will not be the fault of the T.R.T.A. , The Greater Attraction T AST Saturday's eliminating rouncliof the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition at Portsmouth had its fair share of ill luck. It coincided with the first home match of the season of the local football team, which seriously depleted ,the number of marshals available. Most of the stewards

were late in arriving and the manceuvring tests began at 11,45 a.m., instead of 11 a.m.

Some of the equipment had also been sent to the wrong centre and it was necessary to improvise. Earlier'users had not repaired damaged equipment and, although it was pre-. sented by The Commercial Motor to the organizers of _the competition only three months ago, it looked as though it had been in service for 10 years.

In addition, Sgt. Bernard Hale, of the Portsmouth Police. who is secretary of the event, was suffering from shingles and certainly was not fit to be out in the wind that howled _ along Southsea's sea front. Despite discomfort, he stuck to .his duties to the last.

Who Dropped the Brick?

ANYONE who assays the unknown must be prepared for embarrassment. • A bodybuilder who .constructed a tipping body in a new material last week put it to the test.. He loaded • it with rubble and engaged the tipping

gear. The sides rcise inexorably, leaving the floor and rubble in a heap on the ground. Better luck next time.
