AN. inquiry was held by Mr. W. P. James, West Midland Licensing Authority, on Tuesday, to determine the base from which E. W. Watts (Haulage), Ltd., Bassetts Pole, operated two vehicles,Reserving his decision, he said that it would be of great importance, as it might be apected to set a precedent.

Mr. J. Foley Egginton, for Watts, said that there was no disputing that the vehicles were kept at Southam. The company's business, however, was controlled from Bassetts Pole. Either Mr. Watts or a foreman was in touch with the foreman at Southam every day.

COURSE FOR CLEANSING STUDENTS

THE London centre of the Institute of Public Cleansing has decided. to inaugurate in October a course aimed at covering in a calendar year the basic work necessary to enable candidates to prepare themselves for the Testamur examination of the Institute. T-he, course will be open only to staff engaged_fulltime on public-cleasing administration work.

Each Tuesday students will assemble at a point in central London. The day's work will be 'divided into four lectures, but occasionally two of the lecture

perpds will be replaced by a visit -to

some plant or works in order to emphasize a practical aspect of the course.

Lectures will be given by chief or deputy cleansing -officers and, in some instances, by senior technical assistants. The fulleSt possible use will be made of films and other visual aids.

ASSESSMENT QUADRUPLED

HAVING had his premises at Ramsbottom 'reassessed at four times their previous value, Mr. John Shilton, haulier and garage proprietor, told. Bury Valuation Court last week that this was exceisive and more than his small business could bear. The assessment was reduced from £43 to £40 gross value and from £33 to £30 rateable value.
