• The Vehicle Inspectorate has set itself a 1 August deadline to approve a full list of speed limiter fitment and calibration centres, giving operators 12 months to have the equipment installed.

All LGVs over 16 tonnes which are plated to tow trailers plated at over five tonnes and registered after 1977 will have to have limiters by 31 July next year. New LGVs over 7.5 tonnes will have them installed on the production line from this August.

Arrangements for authorising fitting and calibration agents were finalised at a meeting of the Vehicle Inspectorate, trade associations, limiter manufacturers and truck builders in London on Monday (27 April).

Limiter manufacturers will sponsor their own list of centres, which will be approved by the Vehicle Inspectorate. This is similar to the system used for tachograph agents.

However, truck manufacturers will be able to nominate their dealers, and individual hau hers will be allowed to sponsor themselves. An agent needs only to be qualified to seal and calibrate one make of limiter.

Unlike tachographs there are to be no fixed calibration periods for limiters. The VI simply says that equipment should be calibrated at intervals specified by the manufacturer. It has not yet decided whether to include limiter inspections in the annual roadworthiness test; this would
