Phillip Houck has

been named Goodyear's National Highway Hero for 1991 after the daring rescue of three children from a blazing car.

Houck was driving through the Texas Panhandle on a cross-country run when he saw a station wagon collide with the rear of a parked flatbed trailer and burst into flames.

He smashed the windows of the vehicle to rescue the occupants, including three children.

Houck was one of 18 driver heroes nominated for the Goodyear award. He was honoured along with three others at a ceremony at the start of the Daytona 500 stock-car race. His prize included a cheque for £11,500; the other finalists received savings bonds worth £2,900 apiece.
