Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

STRATI-ICLYDE PTE is not to challenge the Government's decision to let an independent run from Barrhead to Glasgow, but it intends to compete with it.

Strathclyde took legal advice after Transport Secretary David Howell overturned his inspector's recommendation and allowed McGill's Bus Service to run an all-day unsubsidised limited stop service in competition with a subsidised suburban rail service (CM, March 19).

It has opted not to challenge this in the Scottish courts, but instead plans to extend three of its Glasgow city services to Barrhead, Neilston and parts of Paisley served by McGill. These would be ordinary stopping services, and are planned in part as feeders to the rail service.

It is likely to be some time before the Scottish Traffic Commissioners deal with these applications, and they have also to consider a long-standing application from Western SMT for another Barrhead-Glasgow route. It was sought after McGill lodged its original application in 1981.
