Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

In one of the bigger commitants to operation at the new eight limit, the P&O subsidiary spending £4.5m on around 30 three-axle tractive units hich can be coupled at once to e company's 12.2m tandem de semi-trailers.

An additional £500,000 is beg spent on sideguards which .e being fitted to the 1,100 tilt, )0 flatbed, 400 van trailers and )0 special purpose units in ;rrymasters' workshops.

Ferrymasters believes it can Iduce the risk of overloading by Jrchasing three-axle tractive ',its rather than semi-trailers, ; only half a tonne of the extra 4.8 tonnes that can be carried in ie heavier vehicles can go over le rear axle of a two-axle trace unit.

It is concerned about its cus)mers providing overloaded ailers, and says the "three plus-two" combination is more compatible with European and Scandinavian legislation.

Final details of the tractive unit orders have still to be finalised, but the main order for 100 vehicles is being placed mainly with Mercedes-Benz (2028) and Scania (112), with a smaller number of Foden S106 units. These are all due for delivery by mid-summer.

Other manufacturers' products are being looked at, and the order for the remaining 60 vehicles due by the end of the year may include other makes.

The company has delayed replacing its tractive units pending the weights increase.

It believes that its running costs will be increased by operating at the higher weight, but the potential of up to a 20 per cent increase in payload per trailer movement will offer customers lower costs per tonne where high density freight is moved.
