Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

In order to assist our new readers readily to grasp the hief characteristics of the numerous types of motorcabs yhich are now being manufactured, we have adopted the aethod of grouping them under several typical headings. )ur basis for the selection of these types has been the conideration of the arrangement of the chief portions of the hassis mechanism in their relation one to another. To this :nd, we have chosen to show four distinct classes, whilst a ifth group includes all those machines which cannot readily )e identified under the chief headings. The first class consists of those machines which have the :rigine, gearbox, clutch, and other details more or less inimately combined, and for that reason we have styled it

the combined-unit type "; the next class is that in which he main chassis details can be considered as distinct units, mt the whole of the engine and transmission gear is indepenlently suspended from the main frame, and has therefore !arned for itself our distinctive appellation of "the insulated mit type "; in the third class, we have those vehicles which lave the engine, gearbox, clutch, and other details inde

pendently mounted on the main frame, and we have named them as belonging to " the separate unit type "; the last of our divisions that have marked class characteristics, is the one in which the gearbox is, to a certain extent, combined with the differential gear and back axle, and this we call " the gear-driven, fixed-axle type." The remaining group consists of a front-driven vehicle, two vehicles in which the change-speed gear is of the epicyclic type, and one friction-driven chassis. Following these introductory remarks, we draw attention to the particular features of interest which are embodied in the actual machines grouped under the headings we have indicated, and we illustrate the broad principles of the types with outline diagrammatic sketches, Details of the various cabs are given in the table on page 240. This table of particulars of the leading motorcabs which are now upon the market includes the horse-power and cylinder dimensions of all the vehicles which are named in these brief class descriptions; it also gives the seating capacity, and various other portant dimensions, of the chassis and complete cabs.
