Welch's Group's pre-tax losses widen as turnover falls

CAMBRIDGE-BASED Welch's Transport saw its pre-tax losses widen to nearly £500,000 as turnover fell by 23.5% in 2009.
The general haulage and contract distribution specialist, which covers the Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire area for Pallet ine, posted a turnover of 213.1m for the year ending 31 December 2009, down from £17.1m in 2008.
Turnover contribution to Welch's Transport from road haulage and warehousing activities fell from 211.1m in 2008 to £8m in 2009. The company includes its garage and crane hire businesses as part of overall turnover. Pre-tax losses increased to 2474,691 for the year, from 2323,132 in 2008, as the average number of employees fell from 218 to 176 and wage costs fell by more than El m (£5.7m to 24.5m).
