The Logistics in Safety Working Group was launched at the ETA's Safety in Transport Conference in June. Other issues discussed at the conference include the fact that VOSA and the HSE are working closely at the roadside to ensure that loads are being carried securely. As part of an HSE load safety campaign, HSE officers have been involved in roadside checks with VOSA staff, but once the roadside action is completed, VOSA intends to continue working closely with the HSE by referring hauliers that are repeatedly found with insecure loads to the HSE. Then HSE inspectors will be able to visit the operators involved to look more closely at their load-handling procedures.
The FTA also advised its members to consider contingency planning. Member advice centre spokesman Ian Smith told delegates that operators should consider the worst that could happen and then work out what they would do in that situation and who would be responsible for each part of the process. By doing this, hauliers can come up with solutions to health and safety problems they are currently facing and will be prepared should an accident or injury occur, he said.
