"In rental, the vast majority of product out there is pre-Euro-5," says Hunt, setting the scene. Indeed, as a reflection of the marketplace, just 30% of Ryder's rental fleet is Euro-5. And with customers running older vehicles for longer, when they come back to the likes of Ryder for Euro-5 trucks, they are in for a surprise.
"The industry has to accept that the pricing of vehicles, whichever source you use to get a truck, is going up. Rental pricing at the moment is somewhere between Euro-4 and Euro-5; the market simply cannot stomach a Euro-5 price —and we accept that But the pricing will have to go up in the future; I think everyone understands that,' he says.
Looking further ahead, he notes: "If Euro-6 means more cost, less payload and no fuel economy advantage at all, then there should be a Euro-5 bubble coming into 2013."
