ONE OF THE LEADERS of the fuel protests in 2000 will lead a convoy of Welsh trucks across the sea to Ireland later this month to highlight the problem of rising fuel prices.
Alan Greene of M&M Greene Transport, who acted as a spokesman for 200 picketing hauliers in 2000 and organised a protest convoy this summer, says he and his 15 fellow operators will each save around .€350 on 1200 litres of fuel by travelling from Pembroke to Rosslare to fill up their trucks.
They will later fill up the same trucks with fuel at home — and Greene plans to show the two fuel receipts to Chancellor Gordon Brown when he meets him in October to raise awareness about the high cost of fuel in the UK.
Greene says: "Feelings are running high, and we want to show the government exactly how much advantage European operators have over us.
-Foreign hauliers fill up with cheap diesel on the Continent and then come over and take our work," he adds "The high cost of fuel is putting many UK operators out of business. My own fuel bill has risen around by around £350 a week over the past month."
