Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Operators can't get enough of two-axle tractors: we check out a Renault Premium Privilege with a lot going for it.

Vehicle excise duty was almost responsible for the death of the two-axle tractor for UK general haulage.About three years ago the system was so lopsided that just about every operator was choosing six axles for 41 tonnes— sales of 6x2s were outstripping 4x2s by five to two.

The knock-on effect is that since VED rates were harmonised the used market has struggled to match demand for two-axle tractors. If they come up with decent mileage, a clean cab and in smart condition the waiting list of potential buyers will be checked before it even hits the forecourt.

A set of Privileges

Independent dealer JDS Trucks of Oldham, Greater Manchester, holds a Renault Trucks franchise; it has just acquired a Premium Privilege 4x2 tractor with the popular 420DCi common-rail engine.

Y587 SND also features a ZF 16-speed slap-over box with a splitter; a sliding fifth wheel; full air management kit; and a standard 550-litre fuel tank. It was first registered in July 2001 and has averaged 72,000km a year on regional work based out of Manchester on a three-year contract.

Julian Smith, director of used operations, snapped up four matching Privileges and he has already sold two.

Y587 SND has been maintained by MS Trucks throughout so it comes with a full service history. Its manufacturer warranty has run out. but the dealer is offering it with a sixmonth driveline and top-up warranty.

It will also come with a full service, 96-point inspection, full valet and 12-month MoT.The tyres look fresh and the paintwork is free of any previous livery The Privilege cab is the high-roof sleeper with two bunks. How many nights have been spent away is anyone's guess, but the clean interior would suggest only a handful.

The dash is free of any scars or obvious damage; both footwells are clean; and both seats seem to have been reserved for non-smokers.

The exterior is equally clean. There are no dents or rusty scratches down the sides, around the bumpers or steps. In fact, the only signs of wear and tear are around the lead-up ramps to the fifth wheel, where the scars have rusted. The asking price is £22,000 (ex-VAT).
