boy. He was born there and still lives there. He started work as a press operator at Bellings in the early 1970s and became a shop steward there. In 1973 he began work as a London bus driver. He was branch chair, secretary and garage rep at Walthamstow garage and then local convenor. In the early 1980s he was district convenor, working in the road transport and commercials section. In 1986 he became a local officer in Stratford. Ten years later he was a national officer and this year became national secretary.
He says that his education came not from school but through the labour movement and organisations such as the Workers' Education Association.
