ENV Willesden works 'uneconomic'

THE decision by the board of ENV Engineering Co. Ltd. to run down and finally to close their Willesden factory was brought about by rising wages without increased productivity, the economic squeeze, and substantial reductions in orders, says a statement by the company. The Willesden factory has to be closed because it is "no longer an economic unit".
The company is not yet in a position to give precise details as to the timing or planning with regard to the closing of the factory. ENV factories at Aycliffe, Co. Durham, and Walkden, near Manchester, are not affected by the closure.
The Willesden works, one of the oldest in the trade, commenced operations on aero engines and components in 1910. Between the wars the company supplied many automobile firms with gears and components, but recently the main part of the works has been devoted almost entirely to serving the commercial vehicle side of the industry.
