AN early start in constructing a vehicular tunnel under the Rivet Tyne between Howdon and Jarrow could not be hoped for according to a statement issued after a short visit to Tyneside by Mr. J. A. Boyd-Carpenter. Minister of Transport, last week.

The Minister inspected the present pedestrian tunnel and met a deputation representing the Durham and Northumberland County Councils, the North East Industrial Development Association. and three local M.P.s.

He said that he was impressed by the strong case. for the tunnel, but he was unable to add to earlier statements that no further additions to the first four-year phase of the authorized road programme could be made unless there was some change in the economic situation.

75 CONTESTANTS FOR CHAMPION'S TITLE AN attractive programme has been arranged for the" " Lorry Driver of the Year" final contest to be held at the Royal Naval Air Station, Brarncote, near Nuneaton, on October 16. It will start at 10 a.m.

Seventy-five drivers will compete for the title, " Lorry Driver of the Year," and for a silver cup presented by the British Motor Corporation. Apart from the exhibition of skill by commercialvehicle drivers, there will be a flying display by naval aircraft, a static display of naval aircraft and equipment. and " Beating Retreat" by the Royal Marine Band and a guard provided by the Royal Navy.

More than 600 drivers will take part in the eliminating rounds to be held in Coventry, Leeds, Portsmouth and Slough.
