vehicle to carry livestock was withdrawn by Mr. R. Gargett. Pen; uddock, near Penrith, before the Northern Licensing Authority last week. A LI licence is to be requested to avoid objection by British Railways.

As reported in last week's issue, Mr. Garen had been refused an earlier application in January this year. The Authority has now granted a short-term A licence to enable the applicant to carry for Messrs. Jackson and Ellwood.

Decision has been reserved upon the application by Messrs. T. Bell and Sons, Wood Street, Botcherby, Carlisle, for an miclitional A-licensed livestock vehicle. As also reported last week, Mr. John Bowman, Gaitsgill, Dal ston, an objector. stated that he had kept observation at a local mart for a C-licensed vehicle of Messrs. Bell.

strong protests against the introduction of this matter by Mr. Bowman were made by Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, for Messrs. Bell.

Allegations concerning this vehicle were unreservedly withdrawn last week. It was explained that the vehicle concerned was operating under a shortterm A licence.

British Railways, who also objected, stated that since the decontrol of livestock traffic there had been a big drop in livestock transport. In the first quarter of this year, 26,000 fewer sheep had been carried in the Carlisle district compared with the last quarter under Government control.

A railway witness concurred that the approximate cost of taking sheep from Carlisle to Lancashire by rail was 3s.-3s. 6d. a head compared with 2s. 3d.-2s. 6d. by road.

F OUR associated companies . are I affected by the appointment by the Midland Bank, Ltd., of a receiver and manager to E. E. Bamford (Contractors); Ltd., Mansfield Road, Alfreton. They are Bamford (Engineers), Ltd., E. E. Bamford (Louth), Ltd., E. E. Bamford (Liverpool), Ltd., and Clumber Transport, Ltd„ who, together with E. E. Bamford (Contractors), Ltd., run more than 300 vehicles, some of them on special A licences.

F. E. Bamford (Contractors), Ltd., were formed last year with a capital of £10,000. -They now have a capital of £19,000. The original directors, Mr. E. E. Bamford and Mr. K. W. Hutchinson, resigned on July 29, and were replaced by Mr. R. A. Robertson and Mr. P. Greavcs. A bank official, Mr. C. F. C. King, was appointed to the board on August 8. Another director is Mr. S. Garrett.

The receiver is Mr. A. G. B. Burney, of Binder, Harnlyn and Co., chartered accountants, 121 Queen Victoria Street, London, E.CA.

Both Mr. Robertson and Mr. Greases are directors of financial companies. Mr. Robertson's directorships include Bowmaker, Ltd., Banking Facilities Trust, Miklos, Ltd., Sales Facilities Trust and the Finance Houses Association. Mr. Greaves is a director, among other companies, of the North Central Wagon and Finance Co., Ltd.

A spokesman -for Mr. Burney told The Commercial Motor on Monday that it was. the intention, at present, that the receiver and manager should continue the companies' business " in the most profitable way possible," [The purchase and assignment by two of the Bamford companies of a number of ex-British Road Services. vehicles is reported on page 135.1

INSPECTORS MAY NOT DRIVE

EmPLOYEES of Newcastle upon Tyne Transport Department have turned down a proposal that bus inspectors should be allowed to work as drivers to help maintain services. The inspectors, it is understood, were willing to accept driving duties provided their status as inspectors was maintained. Newcastle needs another 100 drivers, and services are being maintained by many men working overtime
