nESPITE obstacles, the output of LI cars and tractors from the works of the Standard Motor Co., Ltd., rose by 25 per cent. during the past 12 months. Tractor sales at home had also 'increased, and were being maintained. The total sales of all vehicles for the year ended last month exceeded a value of £30,000,000, of which exports represented about £20,000,000.

Mr. Harry Ferguson, referring to the recent cut in tractor production, said that if export obstacles affecting all industries could be overcome and a real drive made for farm mechanization here, he was certain that the Standard factory would, in a short time, turn out tractors at far above its present rate.

I.R.T.E. VISITS HENLEY'S TYRE FACTORY

ON August 24 a representative party of members of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers paid a whole-day visit to the Gravesend factory of Henley's Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd. They were welcomed by the works manager, Mr. C. H. Harris, and the sales manager, Mr. F H. Petrie. After a talk by the former, other executives were introduced, and the party split into small groups for the tour. A Maidstone and District double-decker was chartered by the company and the party was taken to luncheon at the wellknown Dickensian inn, the "Leather Bottle," at Cobham. A reminder of the Henley incentive scheme, which has proved so successful in improving quality and production, was given by beer jugs on the tables and a barrel at

the end of the room, each bearing this word—" InOentive."

Following tea at the works, came question time, when the 1.R.T.E. president, Mr. G. Mackenzie Junner, took the opportunity to express great appreciation of the reception accorded to the party. He also spoke of the excellent conditions enjoyed by the company's workers. Other members said how refreshing it was to find people who seemed so pleased to carry out their tasks. Certain other points raised will be dealt with later.
