Hauliers living in districts where chemicals are made should note that the demand for formaldehyde is still keen. There is good business in red and white lead, and in. lead acetate and lead nitrate, whilst the demand for caustic soda, sodium acetate, sodium compounds generally, as well as potassium permanganate, remains steady.

North-east Coast.

Some good orders have been placed in West Hartlepool with local timber merchants.

A contract for the supply of two blast furnaces has been secured by Head, Wrightson and Co., Tees-side. Messrs. J. Barrow, Cambrian Street and Burns Street, Jarrow-on-Tyne, are to build 120 flats at Green Lane for South Shields Town Council. Messrs. R. Baxter, Hodgson Lane, Blytb, Northumberland, are to erect 36 houses for Weetslade Urban District Council, also 80 houses for Whickham Urban District Council.

Twenty-eight houses are to be built at Hundens Lane, Darlington, by Messrs. 3. R. Hildon and Sons, Geneva Crescent, Darlington, whilst Messrs. R. Blackett and Son, Darlington, are to erect a garage in Grange Road, Darlington, for the United Automobile Services, Ltd.

Yorkshire.

Hull docks are still well filled with timber, whilst ff•esh shiploads are arriving daily, so that there is plenty of haulage work. The building trade in Grimsby is improving.

Lewis's new store on The Headrow, Leeds, is to be opened early this month. Swinton and Pendlebury Education Committee is to provide a junior and senior school. A nurses' home is to be erected and furnished in connection with Montagu Hospital, Mexborough. Eighty-eight houses are to be built by Messrs. R. B. Porter, Woreborough Dale, Barnsley, for Woreborough Urban District Council, whilst Messrs. Angus Rothera, Askern, are to build four houses at Askham Beyan and six houses at .Church Fenton for Tadcaster Rural District Council.

Lancashire.

Lancashire readers, in particular, should note the opening paragraph of this article relating to chemicals, especially those 'within range of St. Helens, Runcorn and Widnes.

The timber trade in Liverpool is much brisker. The leather trade is still improving and tanners are optimistic, the demandlor all grades being keener.

The demand from the home trade for Manchester cotton goods is broadening and, when the labour troubles are settled, there should be good business.

Work is commencing almost immediately on the new hotel, which is to be built at Morecambe, for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Co. Salford Town Council is to erect a new police station in Regent Road.

Midlands.

Manufacturers of leggings and gaiters In Wellingborough are busy. Stafford boot and shoe factories are busier. There is a little more activity in the timber trade in Birmingham, especially in sawn and planed goods. Business in toys, sports goods and games is good.

A large hotel is to be built in the centre of Walsall, and the town council is to spend £50,000 on improving the centre a the town. Thirty-two houses are to he erected in George Street and Hall Street, Swadlincote, for the urban

district council. , Wales.

There is plenty of haulage of timber from the Cardiff docks. Some tin-plate works in Llanelly have re-opened. There is still fair business in holiday footwear in South Wales.

East Anglia.

Norwich is preparing for a trades festival in September and manufacturers of all kinds of products are busy accordingly. Messrs. W. G. Reade, Aldeburgh, are to build 16 houses in Ellough Road, Beccles, for the town council. Scotland,

Lewis's Royal Polytechnic, Ltd., Argyle Street, Glasgow' is to build a departmental store on the site of its present warehouse and adjoining premises are now being demolished.

An increase in the demand for timber for building is reported from Leith.

Anderson's (Motherwell), Ltd., 54, Caursington Road, Motherwell, is to build new schools at Niddrie Mains for Edinburgh Corporation.

West Country.

Trade in the timber yards in Bristol is maintained—even improving. There is a lot of timber on the quays ready for removal., London and Home Counties Bermondsey leather manufacturers are still dispatching goods ordered prior to the August holidays. Hat makers in Luton are working overtime.

Hertz Education Committee is to erect a school at St. Stephen, near Watford, and a senior school is to be built at Wilton by the Church of England School Managers.

School buildings are to be constructed in Chesham Road, Berkhamsted, by Messrs. W. Lawrence and Sons, Finsbury Square, London. Sixty houses are to be built by Messrs. J. L. Ford, 254, Leicester Road, Loughborough, for the urban district council.

A cinema is to be erected at Princes Risborough, and Huntingdon Hippodrome' Ltd., is to have a new cinema in High Streeet, Huntingdon.
