WE are able to announce that Scamraell Lorries, Ltd., London and Watford, has just turned its attention to the manufacture of fire-engine chassis. As is well known, the company has, for many years, specialized in heavy-duty goods carriers, having even produced a 100-ton articulated vehicle.

The new chassis, however, is of the low-frame type, and is mounted on four wheels carrying 36-in. by 7-in. pneumatic tyres. The power unit, as may be expected, is the well-known Scam:eel' four-cylindered overhead-valve petrol engine of 5-in, bore and 5Fin. stroke, the output being 85 b.h.p. A fourspeed gearbox is fitted, this, with the engine, being mounted in a three-pointsuspended sub-frame The drive is conveyed from the gearbox to the back axle by a tubular propeller shaft having Spicer universal joints The final drive is of the overhead-worm type, with fourbevel-pinion differential gear and fully floating axle shafts.

Foot-operated expanding brakes are provided on all four wheels, the hand lever affecting only the rear wheels. A two-stage turbine fire-pump is fitted, this being constructed in hard bronze with a high-tensile steel impeller shaft running on ball bearings, and bronze balance valve with renewable seatings. The pump is equipped with a rotary air exhauster and has a coneclutch coupling gear It has two 5-in, suction points vntl four delivery connections with strainers. The delivery is at the rate of 400 gallons per minute, against a total head of 296 ft., including 20-ft. suction. The pump is mounted at the rear of the chassis, the suction point being at the side, whilst the delivery valves and connections are at the top.

The cab is of the open type, and the body, which is of special design, provides side-box accommodation. Hose reel and mountings for a Bayliss extending ladder are !fitted, and provision is made for first-aid extinguishers.

Scammell Lorries, Ltd., announces that it is already submitting several tenders for the supply of this new machine, and the first example is being built for Watford Borough Council.
