Liverpool's Busy Municipal Motors.

Daring 1931 over 400,000 tons of domestic and trade refuse were collected by the vehicles, motor and horse drawn, that form part of the fleet of the Liverpool city engineer's department. A summary of the work of the cleansing aud scavenging department is included in the annual report of the medical officer of health. It is mentioned that five sweeping machines are employed regularly, three on night work (one of which collects as well as sweeps), coveing approximately 100 brush-miles of roadway nightly and two on day work, brushing the roadway and picking up the sweepings in side streets. In connection with street watering, upwards'of two-and-a-quarter .million gallops of water were distributed, during the season, in addition to the large quantity used for street washing.

"Abnormal" Loads and Weak Roads.

Warwick County Council is somewhat perturbed by the brick traffic by road from a point near :canton Village, particularly to Bedford. It is said that the roads are not strong enough to cope with this class of traffic and the company operating the steam wagons concerned has been informed that it will have to pay any additional cost of road maintenance caused by the vehicles carrying " abnormal " loads.

The council has .accepted the company's offer to supply a quantity of material, free of charge, to make good certain damage.

Joint Fire-brigade Service in South • Wales.

Negotiations have been carried on by local authorities in the districts surrounding Swansea with Swansea Corporation for obtaining the service of the latter's fire-brigade in their areas.

The report on the matter submitted to the Pontardawe Council shows that the proposed annual charges by the Swansea brigade for the service were as follow: Pontardawe, 1700; Dweller, 1450; Ystradgynlais, 1250. In the event of arrangement being arrived at the Swansea authority undertook to provide a new motor fire-engine for station in the Llw-cher area at a cost of £2,600 and a new trailer for the Pontardawe area.

A committee recommended Pontardawe Council not to accept the terms, which were considered too high, and negotiations are to take place with the Ystradgynlais Council for the purchase of a fire-engine, or engines, to serve the two areas jointly, and one or more new trailers for the Ystradgynlais area. In the event of agreement it was suggested that Pontardawe authority might buy the engine and trailer equipment and Ystradgynlais Council pay an annual contribution for service. Ripon Saves by Using Road Transport.

Following the refusal of the railway company to reduce its coal leading tender, Ripon City Council has decided, on the recommendation of its gas committee, to use road transport instead of rail for the forthcoming year's supply, _amounting to 4,000 tons. The saving by road is computed at is. per ton, which amounts to 1200 per annum.
